Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah was at the Loftus Stadium in Pretoria to monitor Black Stars and Sundowns defender in the South Africa top-flight match against Kaizer Chiefs on Thursday night but the recovering centre-back was not played in the game.

Coach Appiah is using his time at the African Nations Championship to monitor some of his players ahead of June's World Cup in Brazil.

Sumaila, who is a key Ghana player, had been cleared by the medical team of his club Sundowns ahead of the team’s crucial league game against Kaizer Chiefs.

This prompted coach Appiah to visit the stadium to watch the match hoping he could monitor Sumaila for the World Cup but the defender was not used in the match.

The match is said to have given the coach a fair idea of how Sumaila is deployed by Sundowns during matches.

Sumalia has been recovering from the hamstring pull he suffered against Maritzburg United in the team’s last league game in December.

The top-of-the-table clash was initially scheduled to take place on November 23, but was moved to December 11 and then January 28 before it was moved to January 23.
