Ghana coach Appiah to name final World Cup squad after pre-tournament camp

Published on: 12 March 2014
Ghana players Asamoah Gyan and Kevin-Prince Boateng will know their fate after the pre-tournament camp

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah says he will name his final squad for the 2014 World Cup after their pre-tournament camping in the Netherlands and the United States.

The Black Stars coach says he has a firm idea about the core of his final squad for the tournament in Brazil in June.

Appiah admits that there are some loopholes in the team that should be sorted after they were beaten 1-0 by Montenegro in a recent friendly.

Ghana will start their pre-tournament camping in the Netherlands in May before proceeding to the United States for the final phase of their preparation for the global competition.

However, Appiah insists that his final squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil will be based on players performance during friendly games during the pre-tournament camping.

“I think I already have my players for the tournament in Brazil [but] I will select my final squad based on the friendly games,” Kwesi Appiah said.

“We’re not too interested in the result against Montenegro but it is good we play such games to shape our team for the tourney,”he reacted after the match in Podgorica.

“There are few things and small touches I would have to do to strengthen my team for the tournament.”

Kwesi Appiah became the first Ghanaians to qualify the Black Stars for the FIFA World Cup after beating Egypt 7-3 on aggregate.

The 2010 World Cup Quarter-finalists are scheduled to play Netherlands before the tournament starts in Brazil.

Ghana face an arduous task at the 2014 World Cup where they play Germany, Portugal and the United States in Group G.

Which three players do you think coach Kwesi Appiah should drop from his final squad? Make your views known in the box below:

I know it is very difficult to drop any of the selected players, but I can say that Jordan Ayew must be reconsidered for our next tournaments. For now, we need strongmen like Adiya, Boakye Yiadom or Acam

'Otwaaa! Wadan no'. I thought you said you will name your squad before the pre-tournament? Anyway, it is only a fool who does not change his/her mind. Up till now you have not been able to solve the BS lateral defense problem, You have not been able to provide an option for Rabiu Mohammed in the holding midfield , have not been able to provide another option for Gyan-Waris pair and want to name you squad before the pre-tournament. You better sit up and think through the solutions for these problems before you can think of naming the squad and then qualifying from this group of death. We have already said that camping in the US before moving to Brazil is not the best option but you people insist on still camping there, abi?hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Bro Fiscko, you are not the only one worried about this. I wonder why people are not talking about it. Maybe there is something I don't know.

It is very tough to drop anybody from the squad, because all of them are good. Am surprise Akwesi Appiah and the GFA are still talking about playing friendly in the U.S soil. Black stars will lose to U.S if they play in U.S before the world cup. So we cant play in any other country apart from the enemies territory? Am warning Black Stars before is too late.
