Ghana coach Appiah praised for local player call-ups

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has exceeded expectations by inviting nine home-based players to the Black Stars for upcoming national assignments.

The Black Stars open their 2014 World Cup qualifiers at home against Lesotho on June 1 before travelling to take on reigning African champions Zambia a week after.

Appiah during his unveiling as the substantive Black Stars coach in April promised to give locally based players equal opportunities in call ups to the national team which has been heavily dominated by foreign-based players in recent times.

And his first official assignment since taking over from Serb Goran Stevanovic, nine local players get the chance to prove their worth with the Black Stars.

Goalkeepers Robert Dabuo, Daniel Adjei and Ernest Sowah join defenders Richsard Kissi and Rashid Sumaila, midfielder Richard Mpong and strikers Emmanuel Baffour, Ben Acheampong and Emmanuel Clottey as members of the local contingent.

The call-ups has been roundly praised by local football fans with many insisting that it will encourage players to stay at home to play for clubs.

Others have also argued that home-based players are hungrier for success than their foreign-based colleagues.
