Ghana defender Daniel Opare has posted a picture posing with bananas to join a growing list of football stars in support of the new social media campaign against racism.
The resurrected campaign against racism took a new twist over the weekend after Barcelona star Dani Alves ate a banana thrown at him – a racist gesture from a fan – in their thrilling 3-2 win over Villareal.
The Brazilian unique response to the offensive gesture by picking up and eating the banana thrown at him has prompted a wave of social media activity against racism.
Several big name players including Neymar, Luis Suarez, David Luis, Mario Balotelli and Sergio Aguero all posted pictures posing with bananas as a sign of their support for the campaign.
Bakary Sagna, Yaya Toure, Hulk, Fernandinho, Vladimir Klitschko and Italy coach Cesare Prandelli have also been pictured with bananas in the new social media craze.
Several other A-list personalities in sectors outside sports have also posted ‘selfie’ pictures of themselves in the same light.
Black Stars defender Daniel Opare will not be left out as he posted a picture on his Instagram page holding a bunch of bananas close to his cheeks with the tagline: ‘Racist!!! What’s that? Love and respect each other,#Black #or #White we are all 1. Godfirst????’
Meanwhile the fan identified as the offender in Sunday’s racist abuse against Dani Alves has since been handed a lifetime ban.
The unnamed fan, identified as a Villareal supporter has had his season tickets withdrawn and banned from entering the El Madrigal Stadium.
