South African side Maritzburg United have confirmed the sacking of Ghana defender John Paintsil.

The experienced player was among eight players released by the Team of Choice who are undergoing changes under new coach Ernst Middendorp.

Paintsil was playing his second season after an impressive debut where he made 27 league appearances during the 2014/15 season.

Other players affected are: Ashley Hartog, Ryan De Jongh, Ayanda Nkosi, Themba Mavundla, Sandile Dlamini and Siyabulela Shai who was recalled by his team.

A statement on the club website read: "The club would like to thank all the players that have parted ways with us, for the time spent at the club and the contribution they have made, especially John, Ashley and Ryan who have spent much more time with the club and contributed immensely to the club’s campaign in the Absa Premiership."
