The Ghana Football Association has officially commented on death of referee Kwame Andoh Kyei who suffered severe beatings during a lower division match days before his demise.

A key stakeholders meeting will be held after the GFA has received a report on what happened.

Below is the full statement released on Tuesday:

It was with profound regret that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) learnt of the tragic death of referee Kwame Andoh Kyei over the weekend.

The assistant referee suffered injuries after he was beaten up during the second division match between Gold Stars and Naa Joe United in Bordie last week Sunday.

He died on Friday after being rushed to the hospital earlier in the day because of the injuries. Doctors are yet to fully establish the cause of his death.

Our thoughts and prayers and those of the wider GFA membership are with his mother Sophia Nketiah, his father Kwadwo Appiah, his family and his wide circle of friends at this sad time.

He was regarded as one of the association’s most promising up and coming referees and was highly respected by his peers.

The GFA has been in touch with the family of referee Kyei since his passing to assure them of the federation’s support in this most trying of times.

A delegation from the Western Region Football Association’s (WRFA) Executive Committee will visit the family in Prestea on Tuesday to sympathise and reveal to them the preliminary action to be taken.

Meanwhile, the GFA has ordered the WRFA’s Executive Committee to provide the full facts of what their preliminary investigation into the events surrounding Mr. Kyei’s death has revealed by 5pm on Tuesday.

A meeting of key stakeholders will be called by the GFA after receiving the report to examine the immediate action to be taken while the police continue with their investigations.
