The Ghana Football Association is set to launch an investigation into circumstances that led to the firing of tear gas into the crowd during New Edubiase United's home match against All Stars last Sunday.

Officials, players and fans took to their heels after police personnel on duty fired a tear-gas into the crowd creating pandemonium.

Sources say the move was to help the Bekwai Police arrest a suspect who mixed with the spectators.

The Ghana Football authorities will find out the circumstances that could have led to loss of life in a Premier League game.

New Edubiase Chief Executive Abdul Salam Yakubu told Happy FM: "It was an unfortunate situation since at the time that the incident took place nothing untoward had happened. We were all enjoying ourselves until we saw the fans, players and other officials run for cover. That was when we realized it was serious and so some officials of All Stars and I also run to save ourselves."

"We were all shocked at the turn of event and it’s a shame that the police had to use tear-gas to arrest an apparent criminal who had come to watch the game."

A Commission of Enquiry into the 9 May 2001 Accra Sports Stadium disaster, in which 120 people died, forbade security personnel from using tear gas at the stadia.
