Black Princesses head coach Bashir Hayford says his girls have shown signs they could contest for the ultimate at theà FIFA U-20 Womenââ¬â¢s World Cup.Ã
The West African giants ensured host nation Canada began their tournament in disappointing fashion with a 1-0 defeat in Torontoââ¬â¢s National Soccer Stadium on Wednesday morning.
A lone strike from the Black Princessesââ¬â¢ Sherifatu Sumaila midway through the opening half proved the difference, and leaves Canada with little margin for error in their remaining Group A matches against Finland and 2006 champions Korea DPR.
While Hayford has been hesitant to talk about his side becoming the first African side to win the tournament, he could not totally brush aside their chances after the victory.
"And we sent a signal that weââ¬â¢re not here for fun - weââ¬â¢re here for business. If I didnââ¬â¢t want to win the World Cup, we wouldnââ¬â¢t be here," he said in the post-match interview.
I had said before the tournament that we had the potential to win the World Cup. I donââ¬â¢t know if weââ¬â¢ll do it, but we do see some signs."
Ghana will continue their campaign with their Group A second game against North Korea at the same venue.
