Ghana move above Zambia in World Cup qualifiers after win over Lesotho
Ghana beat Lesotho 2-0 on Sunday

Ghana regained control in Group D of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers after a hard-fought 2-0 win in Lesotho on Sunday.

Goals from defender John Boye and Asamoah Gyan helped the Black Stars to cruise to the impressive victory in Maseru against a very stubborn Lesotho side, giving the West Africans the advantage in the group.

The Black Stars have now toppled Zambia at the top of the group with a one point lead after the desperate were held to a shock 1-1 draw against Sudan in Ndola on Saturday.

Ghana knew victory in Maseru will better their chances of progressing to the final qualifying round and did not disappoint.

After reeling under pressure in the opening 40 minutes, the 2010 World Cup quarter-finalists opened the scoring against the run of play.

AC Milan ace Sulley Muntari dinked in a free-kick which was headed on by Jonathan Mensah for centre-back John Boye to finish off.

The visitors held onto the lead to go into the break the happier of the two sides.

After the interval, Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah pulled out striker Richmond Boakye-Yiadom and brought on 2009 FIFA U20 star Dominic Adiyiah.

Also, Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu substituted Muntari as coach Kwesi Appiah sought to sore up the midfield following incessant second-half attacks from the home side.

Muntari did not respond kindly to his substitution as he walked straight to the dressing room without going to the bench.

The strategy by the Black Stars coach paid off as they regained control of the midfield to create opportunities for the Ghanaian attackers.

Lesotho coach Leslie Notsi was forced to replace first choice goalkeeper Mohau Kuenane just after the hour mark for picking up an injury.

Phasumane Kholuoe took his position and  in the 85th minute he picked up a ball from his net after failing to stop Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan.

Gyan was set up by Kwadwo Asamoah as the striker's first shot was blocked by the goalkeeper before the Black Stars responded by diving to to head in the winner.

Ghana now need a draw against Zambia at home in September to advance to the third qualifying round of the qualifiers.

Ghana line-up: Fatau Dauda, Samuel Inkoom, Harrison Afful, John Boye, Jonathan Mensah, Rabiu Mohammed/Rashid Sumalia, Sulley Muntari/Emmanuel Agyemang Badu, Kwadwo Asamoah, Richmond Boakye Yiadom/Dominic Adiyiah, Asamoah Gyan, Christian Atsu.
