Ghana League faces sponsorship blow

The Ghana Premier League could lose huge sums of money following reports that Glo, the league's headline sponsors, intends to pull out of the West African country.

According to the state-owned Daily Graphic, the telecommunications operator wants to exit Ghana as it faced several challenges from some interests bent on sabotaging their planned take-off.

Glo Mobile says it faced encroachment of its frequency allocated it by the National Communication Authority, repeated sabotage of its billboards and the delay in securing approval for the swift deployment of its infrastructure.

The company's US$ 15 million sponsorship deal for a period of five years will expire at the end of the 2013/2014 season.

The Nigeria-based telephony giants took over competitors MTN, in a deal valued at US$15 million over five years as title sponsors for the national team.
