Ghana League: Team of the Week VIII

Published on: 29 November 2011

Big wins for the top four clubs as Kotoko, Chelsea, Hearts of Oak and Dwarfs continued to dominate and exert superiority in the eight week old league- early intents of what should be expected in the entire season.

Performers from these clubs dominate the Team of the Week put together by GHANAsoccernet's SADDICK ADAMS.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Formation  4-3-3

Goalkeeper: IBRAHIM YEKINI (Wassaman FC) V Kotoko

Very rare to see a team lose 1-4 and still provide a goalkeeper for the team of the week.

Asante Kotoko were on a rollercoaster and seemed to be cruising to a repeat of the 10-0 win against Wassaman in the 1966 league.

Four goals in the first half could have spelt doom of the Tarkwa based side but after Herbert Addo decided to replace Michael Tetteh with Yekini, confidence and sanity returned at the back.

The substitute goalkeeper stood between the guest and a record cricket scoreline.

He denied Ahmed Toure, Nathaniel Asamoah and Fatawu Mohammed several times in the game.

Right-Back: YAW FRIMPONG (Kotoko) V Wassaman FC

Frimpong is a player who has already featured in my team of the week this season - and in this form it won't be the last time.

The high flying full back was at his best with his trademark menacing runs against the relegation threatened side.

His curly crosses were always dangerous to deal with by the Wassaman defence.

Left-Back: RICHARD KISSI (Chelsea) V AshGold

With Alfred Arthur serving suspension, the former Liberty Professionals left back stood in perfectly for the Blues.

He was very calm at the back and linked up play perfectly with Clottey on the left side of the field.

Kissi would definitely provide a selection headache for Hans Van der Plyum when Arthur returns.

Central Defence: KOFI AGYARE (Hearts) V Wa All Stars

Every side with the potential to win a trophy needs a caliber of defender you can depend on.

Just how he read the danger, positioned himself behind Sammy Adjei and managed to block the header from Samuel Gyasi on the line was nothing short of miraculous.

Was the main pillar of a 10 man Hearts Oak winning side. Amazingly, Agyare coped well even in the absence of his preferred partner Phillip Boampong who took an early shower.

Gradually, the former Berekum Arsenals defender is maturing into a world-class player.

Central Defencea: RASHID SUMAILA (Dwarfs) V Edubiase FC

The Black Stars defender showed just how he earned his call up on merit.

Pocketed the hard working Emmanuel Baffour throughout the game and made mince meat of the top goal scorer especially in the final twenty minutes of the match.

A player has a natural instinct to defend the goal.

Midfield-BERNARD AKUFFO (Tema Youth) V Bechem United

He scored a vital goal for Tema Youth and was a driving force throughout a physical encounter against Bechem United.

Akuffo pulled the strings when his team walloped Medeama 3-0 and repeated his form yet again.

The win lifts Tema Youth from the relegation ranks to 12th place as they prepare for their trip to the Kpando Park in midweek.

I expect Akuffo to lift his side a bit more if he should continue with such kind of performances.

Midfieder-SOLOMON ASANTE (Chelsea) V AshGold

The speedster caused a lot of hell for the miners early on in the match. He won a penalty for his side in during one of those quick runs.

The diminutive man covered a lot of grass apart from dealing mercilessly with the AshGold defence on the right wing.

Midfielder- BISMARK ASIEDU (Dwarfs) v Edubiase

The agile midfielder is growing into a real Dwarfs gem. He is professional, economical with the ball and no fuss.

The Dwarfs skipper won the ball for the second goal against Edubiase and his work rate was very high this time after some dull displays in the two previous fixtures.

In fact, it seems as though the responsibility of the Dwarfs captaincy has paid dividends and if the Cape Coast side would continue with their unbeaten run, Asiedu should always be present.

Midfield-YAHAYA MOHAMMED (Kotoko) V Wassaman FC

The box to box midfielder eclipsed the Wassaman midfielders with his experience.

He was good last week against Hearts but he was even better this week against the promoted side.

He proved why his coach believes he is a Black Stars material.

Mohammed has always been inspiring in every match he features in but the big question again is how long he can last for the Porcupine Warrior this season.

Attack- EMMANUEL CLOTTEY

This young man has developed into a proper footballer and has been in top form since he returned to domestic action after failing to land deal outside.

He was raw and precocious at Great Olympics but student-like at Tema Youth under coach Atila Sekerlioglu.

Now at Chelsea he is becoming the star many people believed was possible if his attitude was right.

With five goals in four matches, how do you expect him to be left out?

Attack- MAHATMA OTOO  (Hearts) V All Stars.

"Mahatma Otoo silence his coconut critics" tweeted Ghana Under-17 assistant coach Opeele Boateng after the tight battle in Wa.

Many Hearts of Oak fans have to rub their eyes in disbelief when they see Otoo playing - and doing so incredibly effectively - in their team's shirt but he was not scoring.

He is up front practically on his own and everything that takes place in the last third involves him.

Many would wonder why Otoo should be selected ahead of other strikers who scored a brace but the work rate of the former Sporting Mirren striker, including reverting deep into the defence of his 10 man side, was a true hallmark of a leader.

He capped his performance with a well taken goal to break their Upper West jinx.

With two goals already in the season and several assists, who cares how many chances he misses?
