Ghana legend Abedi Pele wants the rules that governs the election of the CAF President changes to allow for members outside the Executive Committee to also contest.

Articles 18 of the CAF Statutes only qualifies current or former members of the Executive Committee to contest for the position as President aside the requirement of possession of the required skills.

Abedi Pele expressed interest in running for the CAF Presidency back in 2004 when the rules allowed for football-related individuals outside the Ex.Co the opportunity to contest.

This rule was however years later amended to restrict candidates for CAF’s top job to former or present Executive Committee members.

But the former Ghana captain wants this provision relooked at to give other worthy candidates the opportunity to become CAF President.

“Rules are made to be respected. We all respect those rules but we also believe that one day those rules will be amended with different issues,” he told Accra based Starr FM.

“For now, there is time and I believe that what Hayatou has done in African football is good.

“He has done great things and we have to acknowledge that.”

Issa Hayatou’s 7th term as CAF President will expire in 2017 and there are already talks he will be gunning for one more term despite health concerns.
