Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has congratulated his former club Chelsea for winning the Premier League title with a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday.

A solitary strike from Eden Hazard was enough to secure Chelsea their first league title in five years with three games to spare.

Jose Mourinho’s side had led the top flight since day one but had to put in a lot of work at the tail end of the season to see off a concerted challenge from their followers.

Crucial wins against Manchester United, a draw at Arsenal and winning an outstanding game at resurgent Leicester City all but secured the title in the bag for the Blues.

Their championship is now very much secured with the win over Palace which sees them stretch their lead over second-placed Arsenal to 16 points with the Gunners having four games in hand.

Essien who remains an ardent fan of the club despite his move to AC Milan couldn’t hide his joy at the feat of his former club.

“True and worthy champions. Congratulations to Chelsea FC, JM [Jose Mourinho] for winning the Premier League. Well done,” the Ghana midfielder who won two league trophies with Chelsea Tweeted shortly after the game on Sunday.

There was brisk business outside of Stamford Bridge with the rapid sale of ‘Champions 2015’ tee-shirts and flags.

The Blues have now in all won four top flight titles – the third under Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho.
