Ghana midfielder Michael Essien bid his father an emotional farewell in a solemn burial ceremony on Saturday.

James Essien was laid to rest at his hometown of Agona Odoben in the Central Region of Ghana.

Michael Essien had been granted compassionate leave by Chelsea to witness his father’s burial.

The funeral was moved to Essien’s residence in Accra after the burial.

Several football stars including former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah and other celebrities attended the solemn event.

Some officials of the Ghana FA were also present to mourn with the Chelsea star.

James Essien who played for Ghanaian giants Hearts of Oak died in September after battling illness.
