AC Milan's Sulley Muntari celebrates after scoring a goal against Lazio during their Italian Serie A soccer match at the San Siro stadium in Milan August 31, 2014.

English side Everton's hopes of signing Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari has been sparked into life after the midfielder ended his three-year spell with AC Milan by mutual consent on Tuesday.

The troubled midfielder's contract with the Serie A club was cancelled paving the way for him to look for opportunities elsewhere with Everton among the frontrunners.

Stoke City and Leicester City are among the clubs reported to be interested in the controversial Ghana star who has played for the some top clubs in the world including Inter Milan.

The Ghanaian midfielder, 30, has spent the last three seasons on the Rossoneri's books after swapping San Siro colours in 2012 when his contract with Inter expired.

Muntari fell out of favour under Filippo Inzaghi last season, appearing for Milan only six times in 2015, and new coach Sinisa Mihajlovic has deemed him surplus to requirements ahead of 2015-16.

"AC Milan and Sulley Muntari would like to announce they have reached agreement to dissolve the player's contract with the club as of today," said a club statement on Tuesday.

Ghanaian international Muntari joined the Rossoneri on a permanent basis in 2012 following a loan spell while he was a registered player with city rivals Inter Milan.

However the 30-year-old midfielder fell out of favour at the fallen Serie A giants last season, especially when Filippo Inzaghi replaced Clarence Seedorf as coach of the seven-time European champions.

Muntari made only 16 league appearances, scoring twice, as the Rossoneri headed for a mid-table finish that ruled them out of Europe next season.

Milan boosted their midfield earlier this week with the capture of Italy international Andrea Bertolacci from Roma and are looking to rebuild their squad under newly-appointed coach Sinisa Mihajlovic.

Milan paid tribute to the battling midfielder, adding: "AC Milan would like to thank Muntari for the commitment and professional attitude shown during his time playing in the Milan shirt and wish him all the very best for the future."

Muntari joined AC Milan in the summer of 2012 from city rivals Inter and is expected to return to the Premier League this summer.

Everton are among the clubs keen to sign Muntari, who can now join as a free agent.

The 30-year-old played for Portsmouth in 2007-08 and spent six months on loan at Sunderland in 2011.
