Ghana move up on FIFA ranking

Published on: 13 March 2014

Ghana have moved two places up the FIFA world ranking table released on Thursday.

Despite last week’s 1-0 defeat to Montenegro in an international friendly, the Black Stars are ranked 35th in the world.

But the Black Stars dropped one place to fifth on the Africa ranking.

Ivory Coast are still in the lead followed by Algeria, Egypt and Cape Verde in that order.

Spain remain on top and are followed by Germany and Argentina in that order.

The March edition took into account a total of 67 matches of which 57 were friendlies.

The other ten games were AFC Asian Cup qualifiers.

Fifa ranking is very really and very understabale too!! People needs to take their time and understand it better! It doesn't depend on the friendly matches u played this month or two years time and it doesn't depend on the qulaitu of opposition u play but rather on your averages for a four year period or cycle!! If your friendly matches or matches fall OUTSIDE THESE FOUR YEAR AVERAGE CYCLE, regardless of your wins u ll still drop!! How a country climbs up or descend down the ranking ladder doesn't depends on your matches u play only but RATHER HOW MUCH OF YOUR OLD RESULTS WERE DISCARDED WITHIN THE FOUR YEAR CYCLE AND HOW- MUCH THE OLD RESULTS OF THE COUNTRIES SURROUNDING U ON THE TABLE WERE DEVALUED!! A country wouldn't play any friendly matches at all but ll still climb up because it has a small percentage of its old results discarded whiles benefitting from other countries within its range on the table because those countries has a huge chunk of its old results devalued or throw away!! Cape Verde, acyclea etc are above ghana not because they have played more matches than us or Nigeria but rather ghana and Nigeria has huge chunk of old matches results making up its four year cycle and these old results are discarded at the end of every month within the four year cycle and the fresh results are not enough to sustain their averages!! SIMPLY PUT, CAPE VERDE AND ALGERIA ARE BENEFITTING FROM DEVALUED OF GHANA AND NIGERIA OLD MATCH RESULTS!! Now the percentage of the four year cycle are as follows.. First year is 50%, second year is 30% whiles third and fourth are 20%!! Nigeria are afcon champs whiles ghana has qualified to the WC which means that the results are fresh and falls outside the four year cycle and hence are not considered but these valuable points(50%) will come in hand when another four cycle starts and u ll see ghana and nigeria going up though they are losing their matches all because of having fresh results within the new four year cycle which is pushing them up!!

Is very simple! The HIGHER percentages of your old match results discarded or devalued, the further u go down the table because the remaining three years percentage which make up only 80% wouldn't be enough to push u up the ladder!! A country can play Brazil, beat them, gained points and ll still drop because much of its old results were discarded and the win over Brazil is outside- the four year cycle and hence not considered! Again a country can be thrashed by Brazil and can still move up because it has a small percentage of old match results compared to its newer match results within the four year cycle and hence climb up and again it also benefits from huge old match results of its immediate neighbors on the ranking table discarded!! thy

FIFA Ranking procedure: The basic logic of these calculations is simple: any team that does well in world football wins points which enable it to climb the world ranking. A team’s total number of points over a four-year period is determined by adding: • the average number of points gained from matches during the past 12 months;and • the average number of points gained from matches older than 12 months (depreciates yearly). Calculation of points for a single match The number of points that can be won in a match depends on the following factors: • Was the match won or drawn? (M) • How important was the match (ranging from a friendly match to a FIFA World Cup™ match)? (I) • How strong was the opposing team in terms of ranking position and the confederation to which they belong? (T and C) These factors are brought together in the following formula to ascertain the total number of points (P). P = M x I x T x C The following criteria apply to the calculation of points: M: Points for match result Teams gain 3 points for a victory, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a defeat. In a penalty shoot-out, the winning team gains 2 points and the losing team gains 1 point. I: Importance of match Friendly match (including small competitions): I = 1.0 FIFA World Cup™ qualifier or confederation-level qualifier: I = 2.5 Confederation-level final competition or FIFA Confederations Cup: I = 3.0 FIFA World Cup™ final competition: I = 4.0 T: Strength of opposing team The strength of the opponents is based on the formula: 200 – the ranking position of the opponents As an exception to this formula, the team at the top of the ranking is always assigned the value 200 and the teams ranked 150th and below are assigned a minimum value of 50. The ranking position is taken from the opponents’ ranking in the most recently published FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking. C: Strength of confederation When calculating matches between teams from different confederations, the mean value of the confederations to which the two competing teams belong is used. The strength of a confederation is calculated on the basis of the number of victories by that confederation at the last three FIFA World Cup™ competitions (see following page). Their values are as follows: UEFA/CONMEBOL 1.00 CONCACAF 0.88 AFC/CAF 0.86 OFC 0.85 Source:

Common sense tells anyone with brains that the FIFA rankings have nothing to do with the quality of the teams. Just look at who is in front of Ghana "Ivory Coast, Algeria, Egypt and Cape Verde in that order" and that says it all. I rest my case
