Ghana must improve in Burkina Faso semi-final game, says Asamoah Gyan

Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan says the Black Stars must improve their game when they face Burkina Faso in the semi-final of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday.

The Black Stars sealed their place in the last four on Saturday after fighting to defeat a stubborn Cape Verde side in Port Elizabeth.

The four-time champions won the match thanks to two second half goals by substitute midfielder Mubarak Wakaso.

There was nothing to choose between the teams in a first half in which both sides played some good football in midfield without producing a single shot on target.

The introduction of Wakaso, who was suspended for Ghana's game against Niger on Monday, certainly had an impact.

He made no mistake with his penalty, lashing the ball down the middle while keeper Vozinha leapt to his left after Gyan was brought in the box.

With all Cape Verde players committed to attacking the Black Stars area including keeper Vozinha with minutes to go, Wakaso broke free from a counter-attack to secure the win for Ghana in an empty net.

Gyan says the penalty against the Blue Sharks proved to be the turning point in the match but must improve their play to be able to defeat the Burkinabes.

"We expected a difficult game and Cape Verde certainly gave us one," said the striker.

"They are tactically disciplined and get behind the ball well.

"The first half was a bit frustrating and they played better than us in the second half but the penalty was the key to winning. It put us on top and opened up the match.

"Now we have to correct our mistakes and improve for the semi-final," added Gyan who is hoping his side can land the title for the first time in 31 years.

Burkina Faso sealed their place in the last four on Sunday after defeating Togo 1-0 in Nelspruit.
