Christian Atsu amongst 17 called up for Japan friendly

Coach Akwasi Appiah traveled with 17 players for Ghana's friendly against Japan on Tuesday - dropping some key players for the match to be played in Yokohama.

The team left Ghana immediately after Friday's 2-1 defeat of Zambia in a 2014 World Cup qualifier in Kumasi.

Asamoah Gyan, Michael Essien, Mubarak Wakaso and Andre Ayew are among a few who featured in the game against Zambia who have been left out of the Japan game.

Kevin-Prince Boateng, Kwadwo Asamoah and Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu also join the list of dropped players for the match against the Asian giants.

Coach Akwasi Appiah will be looking to use the friendly to assess his other options ahead of Ghana's important World Cup qualifying playoffs next month.

The Black Stars are expected to be one of the five seeded countries going into the CAF draw later this month to determine the opponent to be played in the playoffs.

The friendly against Japan thus forms part of preparations towards the crucial playoffs stage next month.
