Ghana Premier League clubs seek financial support from government

New Edubiase President Abdul Salam Yakubu is calling for financial support from the state for the Premier League clubs ahead of the meeting of club heads on Wednesday.

Owners and heads of Premier League clubs are meeting to discuss ways to financially sustain their outfits in the Ghanaian top flight.

The meeting called by club welfare body GHALCA was first reported as a planned gathering to secure a resolution from club heads to boycott the Premier League over lacking funds.

The Ghana FA have been unable to secure sponsorship for the Premier League after the deal with telecommunication giants Globacom expired last year.

The Nigerian-owned firm remain in arrears of sponsorship monies due the clubs in the expired deal.

The New Edubiase President has been tagged as the brain behind the idea of boycotting the league.

But Yakubu in denying these reports says Wednesday’s meeting is only to afford clubs put together a comprehensive concept to solicit financial support from the Ghana government and corporate bodies.

“The league was played without any financial inducement in times past but football today has changed,” he told Metro FM.

“The clubs are really suffering and we must find ways towards sustaining the sport.

“We can no longer rely on player sales and sponsorships that don’t even come.

“So we hope to meet at the clubs and agree on a concept to sell to the government for financial assistance or to the corporate bodies for sponsorship.

“It is not about boycotting the league. That can never happen.

“We have played the first round of the match anyway and therefore on what basis are we boycotting the league?”
