West African Football Academy recorded an impressive 2-1 win over AshantiGold at the WAFA Park in Sogakope in the Ghana Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Skipper Martin Antwi race WAFA into the lead in the 2nd minute before Ghana U20 talisman Charles Boateng topped it up for the host.

The Miners drew the consolation goal through Safiu Mumuni on the 79th minute mark.

WAFA went into the crucial clash at Sogakope without the enigmatic Dutch trainer John Killa who vacated his role as head coach after a six year spell.

Assistant Patron Akakpo who is installed in his place had to deal with the under-performing champions without the influential attacker Samuel Tetteh who had joined Austrian giants Red Bull Salzburg.

The Miner's casualty for the clash included the absence of Kadri Mohammed and Augustine Sefa while Cudjoe Fianoo also resigned from his role as CEO.

Influential skipper Martin Antwi steered home the opener for WAFA on the 2nd minute mark. Antwi finished off a brilliant move initiated from midfield by the exciting Academy Boys.

Ghana U20 midfielder Caleb Amankwaa squeezed through two defenders before playing through Antwi who swerved Fatau Dauda to open the scoring for WAFA.

The Miners held WAFA for most part of the second, stopping a string of attacks initiated by the home side.

But the 75th minute failed to bring answers for Bashir Hayford's men. The exciting Charles Boateng buried his effort instinctively beyond Dauda for the second goal of the clash.

AshantiGold halved the deficit five minutes later when striker Abdul Safiu Mumuni managed to beat Razak Abalora in the WAFA post and pulled a goal back for the home side.
