President John Mahama has charged the Black Stars to qualify and improve upon Ghana’s record at the 2014 World Cup.

The nation is still grieving over the team’s disappointing finish at the just ended 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars failed to end a 31-year trophy drought in South Africa after crashing out at the semi-final stage in a penalty shootout loss to Burkina Faso.

Coach Akwasi Appiah’s men failed to pick themselves up from the crashing defeat to succumb to a depresssing 3-1 loss to Mali in the third-place playoff to end the competition empty handed.

Ghana’s President Mahama in his first State of the Nation adress to Parliament has now tasked the team to first qualify and then exceed the feat attained by the Black Stars’ previous World Cup particiaption in Brazil 2014.

"I request the FA and management of the Stars to take steps to building a more formidable team that will not only qualify for the World Cup but will surpass the achievements of their predecessors in previous World Cup,” he said on Thursday.

Ghana will resume its campaign in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers next month against Sudan.

The team is expected to revive the waning confidence of Ghanaians with a resounding defeat against the Falcons of Jediane on March 24 in Kumasi.
