Ghana severely depleted for Chile friendly

Published on: 29 February 2012

Ghana will be missing 11 key players when they take on Chile in an international friendly in the United States on Wednesday, which gives the South American the advantage.

Injuries and the urge for new players to be given the opportunity means the Black Stars will not be at their strongest when they take on the tough South Americans.

Captain John Mensah, key midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang- Badu, defender Isaac Vorsah as well as Jordan Ayew and Andre Ayew have all been ruled out through injuries.

Striker Asamoah Gyan will not be available after taking a temporary break from the Black Stars.

Samuel Inkoom, Prince Tagoe, Charles Takyi, Ernest Sowah and Mohammed Abu have been dropped from the Afcon squad for the friendly.

Chile have presented their strongest squad for the game while Ghana have been depleted by the absence of some key players including the Andre and Jordan Ayew.

Chile have named a 21-man squad made up of 12 local and nine foreign-based players, including Barcelona star Alexis Sanchez and goalkeeper Claudio Bravo of Spanish side Real Sociedad.

Other top players in the team are Critobal Jorquera of Italian club Genoa, Gary Medel of Sevilla, Matias Fernandez of Sporting Lisbon of Portugal, Napoli's Eduardo Vargas and dangerous striker Humberto Suazo of Mexican side Monterrey.

They have the upper hand in the game psychologically because the west Africans are down and raising a team for this game was fraught with visa processing difficulties.

The Black Stars are going into this match in a very low spirit following the disappointmentat the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

Chile is ranked 13th in the Fifa rankings while Ghana are placed 23rd.

This is the first time Chile is meeting Ghana at the senior level.

The nickname of the South American team is La Roja, meaning The Red One
