Asamoah Gyan has set a new UAE Pro-League record

Asamoah Gyan missed out on another award in the UAE as Brazilian striker Grafite was named the International Player of the Year.

The Ghana striker who broke the record of the most goals scored in a single season in the Pro-League with 31 goals was surprisingly overlooked for the prestigious accolade.

The gong was rather handed to Al Ahli’s Grafite who finished the season seven goals behind the Black Stars captain in the race for the division’s top scorer.

Gyan’s record in the just ended season is even more startling considering he missed close to six weeks of action while on national team duty at the 2013 Nations Cup.

He spent further four-weeks on the sidelines after picking a thigh strain again while playing for the Black Stars in the 2014 World Cup qualifier against Sudan.

The 27-year-old however returned strongly to continue with his impressive goalscoring rate to complement his 13-game goalscoring run at the beginning of the season.

It was therefore surprising the former Sunderland hitman was not handed the award – with the accolade rather crossing carpet to Grafite who was second-best scorer in the UAE Pro-League.

Al Ain however had some joy with star-man Omar Abdul Raham bagging two awards; the Fans’ Player of the Year and Emirati Player of the Year.
