Asamoah Gyan says Andre Ayew deserves to win African Footballer of the year award

Ghana superstar Asamoah Gyan says his deputy national team captain Andre Ayew deserves to win the 2015 African Footballer of the Year thanks to his performances for his country and club this year.

The Swansea City winger is among the 10 players shortlisted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) this week for Africa's best award for footballer for this year.

The shortlist for the award was trimmed to 10, with Yaya Toure still in the running to win the award for the fifth consecutive year.

Ayew was originally named on the 37-man shortlist in October and is one of three Premier League players among the final 10 nominees.

Southampton's Sadio Mane and Man City midfielder Toure are also in contention.

However, some people are tipping Toure and Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the award.

But Gyan insists Ayew, who is a midfielder, stands about the rest because of his record since January.

“We are all behind him (Ayew) he is making Ghana proud right now because he is the only Ghanaian in the list, as a Ghanaian Andre has done well and i believe all of them deserve to win it,” Gyan told Starr FM.

Ayew was the top scorer at the Africa Cup of Nations in January as a midfielder.

He continued with his heroics with from February with Marseille where he scored 14 goals in 12 matches before switch to England.

Ayew cemented his important role for Swansea City by scoring five goals in 11 matches in the Premier League by early November even though he is only a midfielder.

The CAF Footballer of the year will be named on Thursday, January 7, 2016 in Abuja, Nigeria after voting by the coaches or technical directors of the national associations affiliated to the continental football organizing body.

The winner will be announced at an awards gala in Abuja on January 7. CAF Player of the Year 2015 10-man shortlist: Andre Ayew, Aymen Abdennour, Modather Al Tayeb, Mohamed Salah, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Sadio Mane, Serge Aurier, Sofiane Feghouli, Yacine Brahimi, Yaya Toure.
