Ghana captain Stephen Appiah will be named in the Black Stars squad for the World Cup in South Africa next month.

A source within the Ghana Football Association has told Ghanasoccernet that the Bologna utility player is ‘a firm member’ of Ghana’s team for the tournament.

According to the Ghana FA, the provisional squad will be unveiled on Friday and the influential captain will lead the team to the World Cup.

There had been concerns over Appiah’s availability and fitness for the tournament, but after coach Milovan Rajevac observed him at first hand for two days in training with Bologna, the Serbian is said to be overly convinced that Appiah has regained his sharpness that immensely served Ghana at the 2006 tournament.

There had been concerns over Appiah’s fitness but the mdfielder has given ample evidence of his readiness in friendlies he has played for the Italian Serie A side.

He has also appeared on the bench of the Serie A side for three times in recent weeks, after also playing for the Black Stars to qualify for the World Cup.

This further underlines the fact he has regained his full fitness after a botched knee surgery.

A dispute with his former club Fenerbahce also extended his stay on the sidelined as they sought to stop him from playing for any club before he joined Bologna about five months ago.

His presence is a massive boost for Ghana ahead of the 2010 World Cup to be held in South Africa which is just some few weeks away.

The former Juventus, Fenerbahce and Parma star was signed as a free agent by Bologna late last year.

The Ghanaian was previously released by the Turkish side in June 2008, but continued to feature for the Ghana national team.
