Ghana U20 coach will not be sacked

Ghana Under-20 Orlando Wellington will keep his job despite failing to progress from the Group stage of the Cape-Town Invitational Football Tournament. Â

The Black Satellites finished third in Group A after amassing four points against Nigeria, South Africa and Argentina.

This has soared the bad reputation of Wellington who was in-charge of the 2011 team which failed to defend the African Youth Championship title.

But the former Berekum Chelsea coach has received the backing of Ghana Under-20 management committee chairman George Afriyie.

"The performance has got nothing to do with the coach. It is not like the coach did not perform well," Afriyie said.

"If you come to a competition and you win your first match, lose to South Africa and able to draw against Argentina, I don't think it is a bad performance.

"If you have a very good Under-17 team, most of the players will progress into the Under-20 team but this is a completely new team.

"The fact that we did not progress to the next stage does not mean the coach did not do well."

Ghana Under-20 will play Uganda in the 2013 African Youth Championship qualifiers in July.
