Ghana U23 face tough test to defend All Africa Games gold medal

Ghana’s U23 will compete with tough opponents Nigeria, Senegal, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Burkina Faso to defend their men’s All Africa Games football gold medal in Brazzaville, Congo this September.

The Black Stars overturned a 1-0 deficit after beating Mozambique 2-1 in Tamale on Sunday to reach the finals of the tournament.

Egypt conquered Burundi with 2-0 wins in each leg, making it 4-0 on aggregate, while Senegal reached the games on the away goals rule at the expense of Mali, following a 2-2 draw in Bamako and 1-1 draw in Dakar.

Meanwhile, Sudan were beaten 1-0 by South Africa but progressed courtesy the 2-0 first leg win.

Zimbabwe managed to draw 1-1 at Cameroon and advanced 2-1 on aggregate.

Burkina Faso forced Cote d’Ivoire to a 0-0 draw in Abidjan after winning the first leg 2-1.

In the women’s event, the Black Queens will face Nigeria’s Super Falcons, South Africa, Cote d’Ivoire and Cameroon, as well as Tanzania, Egypt and hosts Congo-Brazzaville for the gold medal.
