Ghanaian defender Dennis Appiah has exited the Coupe de France

French-born Ghanaian defender Dennis Appiah's hopes of trophy success evaporated on Tuesday night after his Caen side crashed out of the Coupe de France after losing to giants Lille.

The AS Monaco loanee expertly converted his penalty from the spot but his Caen side eventually got eliminated after losing 4-3 after the shoot-outs.

Appiah, 21, is on loan at Caen in the French second-tier league (Ligue 2) from AS Monaco and he has been impressive since his loan switch.

However any hopes of him reaching the final of the domestic cup competition was dashed after his Caen side got picked out on penalties at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

After a pulsating 3-3 drawn game in regulation and extra-time, the match headed to shoot-outs and Appiah converted his kick expertly but his team-mate Mattias Autret missed his kick and Caen exited the competition.

Appiah was born to Ghanaian parents in France and holds a French citizenship passport.
