Dutch side NEC Nijmegen could have Ghanaian defender Marcel Appiah back from injury in a matter of weeks as the versatile full-back is close to returning to the pitch.

The 27-year-old suffered a horrible knee injury last month while in action for NEC against Ajax Amsterdam but is set to return to the field of play.

Appiah collided with a team-mate who accidentally landed on his knee in the 32nd minute of the game but continued to play in the game until he was replaced on the 72nd minute.

But after spending close to 4 weeks on the sidelines, he is expected to return to training in a couple of weeks.

"I suffered an injury close to what I had last season but this time it is not as serious," he told GHANAsoccernet.com.

Appiah was born to a Ghanaian father and a German mother in the German town of Schwelm but has openly declared his interest in playing for Ghana.
