Ghanaian midfielder Reuben Ayarna has joined American giants DC United on trial after failing to land a deal with rivals Colorado Rapids.

Ayarna - a 28 year old Ghanaian - is out of contract with Swedish 1st division side BK Häcken but has spent most of his pro career with GAIS, a team that has bounced between the top flight and the 2nd division during his tenure.

Intriguingly, Ayarna played three seasons with Boston College, garnering ACC All-Freshman honors in 2005 and an All-ACC 2nd Team nod as a sophomore.

Before joining up with United's camp, Ayarna was on trial with the Colorado Rapids, a team that signed a La Liga veteran that plays the same position about a week or two after Ayarna arrived.

Judging from who he was partnered with in Colorado's preseason games, Ayarna's position with United would be to be the more attack-minded player in a double-pivot rather than being Perry Kitchen's understudy.

Of course, with Davy Arnaud, Jared Jeffrey, and LEWIS NEAL! already on the team, that's hardly an easy gig to get. It's worth noting that recently released draft pick Zach Barnes is also a defensive midfielder.

Nonetheless, United is certainly not in a position to turn away players in their prime who have five years of experience in a decent league while also having a college background that is as good or better than most 2nd round picks.

Of course, fans will probably be more interested to see trialists in wider positions, as United appears to have just three MLS-ready fullbacks while also looking pretty shallow when it comes to wingers.
