The Professional Football Association of Ghana (PFAG), has been launched in Accra on Friday to protect the interest of retired and active Ghanaian footballers both home and abroad.

PFAG is affiliated to Fifa, Caf and FifPro, the worldwide representative of all professional football players.

The Association founded in May 2009 intends to provide benefits such as general insurance packages, investment opportunites, mentorship programmes, health packages among other things.

The organisation will also seek to protect the interest of local player especially those who have been handed slave salaries by several clubs in the Ghanaian top-flight.

PFAG will also kick against the culture of Ghanaian players being put on transfer list without compensation even though they still have running contracts with clubs.

The worldwide players union has defended several Ghanaian players in the past with Fifpro providing the needed support for Stephen Appiah in his fight against Turkish club Fenerbahce.

Appiah, the Ghana captain who is known for fighting the cause of players both at home and abroad, was named the vice president of PFAG.

All Ghanaian players must be affiliated to the organisation and they will be protected when they are in crisis both at home and abroad.

"I feel humbled and want to thank the senior most players who took this decision. We hope things go our way for us to achieve our goals and objectives," PFAG vice-President and Ghana Captain Stepten Appiah said at the launch on Friday.

Other board members include Kwame Ayew, Augustine Arhinful, Sammy Kuffour and Tony Baffoe while other members like Abedi Pele opted to take advisory roles.

Several players from the present and past generation were at the launch at the Accra Mall on Friday including striker Prince Tagoe and hot-shot Kwadwo Asamoah.

Tagoe also received glowing support from PFAG members  in his fight against Hoffenheim when they wrongfully cancelled his contract because of a fake medical report.
