Ghanaian striker Derek Asamoah has put pen to paper on a new deal with English fourth tier side Carlisle United, the club have confirmed.

The forward signs a short-term contract which will keep him at the club until the end of 2015.

Given his journeyman reputation, it is no surprise that the Ghanaian has not been tied down on a long term deal, with his longest stint at any club in his 15 years as a professional being three years, which he spent at Northampton Town between 2001 and 2004.

Since then, he has spent just a season per club, bar a two year stay at OGC Nice, playing in Bulgaria and South Korea, amongst other locations.

Carlisle manager Keith Curle believes that the six-month contract is good for Asamoah, saying that the player "needs to be hungry if [the manager is] going to get the best out of him," with the deal giving him "that extra edge" on the pitch.

However, despite this initially implying otherwise, Curle's comments suggest that Asamoah is committed to the club, as the player was "ready to sign his contract" as soon as he returned from his holiday and, as a result, "there were never any real issues."

A real Journeyman

The 34-year-old began his career with Slough Town, a semi-professional side based in the South of England.

Three goals in eight league games for them as a 19-year-old had Northampton interested in the player and, after a trial, he would sign for them.

Asamoah spent three years with the club, scoring 30 goals in 112 league games before joining Mansfield Town in 2004.

From here, he enjoyed spells with Lincoln City, Chester City and Shrewsbury Town, before a two year stay in France with Nice, albeit one during which he failed to play for the club's first team.

He returned to the UK in 2009 to play for Hamilton Academical in Scotland, before time in Bulgaria with Lokomotiv Sofia and in South Korea with both the Pohang Steelers and Daegu FC.

Asamoah returned to England last summer and scored five goals for Carlisle last season. His efforts were key as the club survived the drop to the non-league, finishing 20th in League Two.
