Ghana's sports minister charges incoming Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah to win back fans

Ghana's sports minister Isaac Asiamah has charged incoming Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah to win back fans.

The 56-year-old has held talks with Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo ahead of his official signing of a two-year deal.

The tenure of former coach Avram Grant marked a sensational nadir as many local fans lost interest in the team.

The low-water mark situation came on the heels of the country's wrecked 2014 World Cup campaign where the players held the West African nation to ransom.

Since the debacle, the players have not enjoyed support from fans - a situation the newly appointed coach must seek to address.

And Ghana's sports minister Isaac Asiamah has backed the former Khartoum Watani tactician to win back the local fans.

“Today the GFA president has brought coach Appiah to my office…we congratulate and welcome him," he said

“I employ coach Appiah to be very assertive in his player selection…help to improve our local league and we hope that you will assist the GFA with ideas needed for the game to be a success.

“Stay focus on your job and may your conviction be clear to make the Black Stars greater than you have come to meet it.

“Bring back the love and supports of Ghanaians. Ghanaians are not so much enthused when they hear about the national team and it is the coach’s duty to win back the support of the people”.

With Ghana's chances of qualifying to the 2018 World Cup in Brazil up in the air, there is concern that the national team could fall even further from favour, a situation Appiah should recognise all too well.

The 56-year-old, who enjoyed a groundswell of support from many Ghanaians, must create a winning side worthy of their passion.

Appiah has his work cut out for him as his first five matches in charge could prove the indices on how his return would turn out.
