With impunity telecommunications firm Glo has agreed a $12m deal with sponsor the Nigeria league when it has huge outstanding debts with the Ghana league.

The Nigerian firm Globacom agreed a three-year deal yesterday to sponsor the Nigerian top-flight league (NPL) but it has not paid Ghana top-flight its outstanding sponsorship debts.

The revelation comes as a slap in the face to Ghanaians who have heavily used the local leauge to promote the Glo brand in Ghana, making it one of the most patronised mobile firms in the country even though it is only in its second year of operation.

Glo are believed to be in arrears of nearly $4m in sponsroship money to the Ghana league yet it will find the money to pay for the Nigerian league.

The deal between was struck between the telecoms firm and the League Management Company (LMC), the operators of Nigeria’s premier soccer competition on Monday.

The league will be known as the Glo Premier League.

The sponsorship is reportedly worth around US$12 million over the deal’s three-year tenure.

It follows months of dispute over the terms of the sponsorship after an initial deal was announced in January.

Globacom chief operating officer Mohammed Jameel said: "Today, we are witnessing the appointment of Globacom as the title sponsor of the Glo Premier League.

"We thank the honourable minister of sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdulah, for his efforts to resolve all the issues surrounding the league title sponsorship.

"We also thank members of the League Management Company (LMC) for all the significant strides they are making to develop the Nigerian professional football league."

Glo's sponsorship of football events have always been shrouded on controversy after clashes with Nigeria, Ghana and CAF over the mobile phone outfit's sponsorship of various football activities.

It has carved a bad image for the company who are now seen as eager to grab sponsorship of football event yet too unwilling to pay the full price.
