Sydney: Former Adelaide United boss Josep Gombau has returned to Australian football to take charge of the U23 national team.

The charismatic manager will oversee the Olyroos’ push to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo and join the coaching staff of Ange Postecoglou’s senior national team, Football Federation Australia announced.

The 40-year-old Spaniard, who will take the reins from August, detailed his excitement at the new role.

“This is a great opportunity for me to work with the best young players in Australia,” he said.

Gombau returns to Australia after two seasons at the helm of Adelaide United between 2013 and 2015, where he ended the club’s eight-year trophy drought by claiming the 2014 FFA Cup with a 1-0 win over Perth Glory.
