Greece players turn down World Cup bonus, ask PM to build new training centre instead

Published on: 29 June 2014
Greece players celebrating their round of 16 qualification.

You might not like their style of play, but this would appear to be another reason to like Greece ahead of their World Cup last 16 clash against Costa Rica.

This World Cup has been dogged with bonus rows. First with Cameroon, even before they set off to Brazil.

And, most famously last week with Ghana where 3 million dollars had to be shipped out to Brazil ahead of their final game against Portugal.

Now, the Greece team have written to their prime minister Antonis Samaras and told him they are not interested in their World Cup bonus but simply want the money to be put towards a sports centre for the national team.

The Greek press report that the squad in Brazil wrote a short letter saying: “We do not want as extra bonus, or money. We only play for Greece and its people. All we want is for you to support our effort to find a land and create a sports centre that will house our National team.”

This letter was written on Sunday June 29, 2014 and signed by all 23 squad members, it came as a result of Greece reaching the second round of the World Cup for the first time in their history.

Presumably, the Greek squad realise they are all well-paid individuals and are concerned for the future of Greece in international football.

You are right. But also, their government and FA officials are not going to steal that money that the players donate for a sports center. In some of our countries, forget it!

Bonus or extra money is different from appearance fee. What facilities or state of art training grounds and advanced physios have GFA built with all the money they have chopped in last 3 world cups??? How has the world cup revenue benefited the youth in Ghana sports and the local leagues? Im happy for the Greeks they have had a rough economic situation almost on brink of disaster, I doubt their players would agree to this agreement if they felt their FA was corrupt and disorganized. European players can make good living financially playing in their native leagues. They treat their players well (Germany built camp in brazil for their team) not as slaves.

When will you BD,s stop mourning ghana's early exit? Those players have pocketed $100,000 each while u dogs are barking with empty stomaches. Move on idiots, coz all your opponents never trained in a blackout carpark. Infact they played so well to return back with a point.

June 29, 2014 09:00 pm (mumbi or whatever) is not worth the effort or acknowledgement. I have read his comments with some askance before starting to post due to my extreme upset with the whole WC fiasco. What is its source of bitterness? From Zambia or Nigeria and why the hatred against Ghana/Ghanaians? Another reason that Africa remains sad.

Compare this with the erratic leadership of a senior player like Sulley Muntari who goes distributing money to poor people in the streets one moment and the next he is slapping people because of delayed payments! I can categorically state that non of these Greek players earn as much as Asamoah Gyan, KPB, Sulley Muntari or Michael Essien. And the pity of these greedy breed is that those players who have benefited most from the Ghana league and the youth soccer development programs like Sulley and Essien are least prepared to use their leadership to encourage patriotism! Sack them all and stop inviting players with troubled histories and no firm roots in Ghana to represent Ghana! There were clamors for Depay to represent Ghana and our press seemed to encourage this so much that they even ignored the fact that he had decided to drop his father's name from his jersey because he said his father was not part of his life! If we had three players with the commitment of Andre Ayew, Ghanaians will be proud of their team even when they lose games!

Please read very well before comparing. the greeks have taken their appearance fee already. It is the winning bonus they are giving up for developmental projects. The black stars were promised the appearance fee in holland, which did not happen. The minister promised it would be paid in miami, it did not happen. the promise continued till after two matches. look what happened was a time bomb waiting to explode and am glad it did. only God knows what would have happen in the future if these dirty corrupt officials had gotten away with this ineptitude.
