Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan ended his six-match goal drought for Sunderland with a 55th minute header in thier 4-2 league win over Wigan on Saturday.

Steve Bruce's side had endured a woeful run which has seen them picked a only point from nine games, but that was ended in style as they pushed Wigan back into the relegation zone.

However, matters looked worsening for the home supporters when Mohammed Diamé arrowed beyond Sunderland's Simon Mignolet for the opener on the 53rd minute.

Gyan saved Steve Bruce's head as fans starting chanting the name of the manager asking him what the scoring would be.

Martínez's team are notoriously poor at defending set pieces and Gyan made them paid for failing to properly clear a free kick.

Accordingly Malbranque found himself in sufficient space to switch feet before supplying Gyan with a splendid cross.

His header proved far too good for al-Habsi.

Sulley Muntari replaced Gyan on the 64th minute and the Black Cats continued their push for more goals.

Muntari set up Henderson to increase the tally to three before Stéphane Sessègnon scored from the spot to put the game beyond their opponents.

Franco Di Santo scored a 90th minute goal but that could not stand between Wigan and a return to the relegation zone.
