Gyan family denies financial settlement with alleged assaulted journalist Daniel Kenu

The Gyan Family have denied going into a financial settlement with Ghanaian journalist Daniel Kenu to drop his lawsuit against Baffour Gyan.

Rumours are rife that Asamoah Gyan who is one of the best paid players in the world with UAE giants Al Ain, doled out a small portion of his fortune to the Ashanti Regional editor of the Graphic Communications Group to drop charges of assault against his elder brother.

Baffour Gyan, an ex Ghana striker had been hurled to court alongside the business manager of Asamoah Gyan – Samuel Anim Addo – having been accused of leading thugs to physically abuse Daniel Kenu.

This alleged assault was said to have taken place as a reactionary measure following an inappropriate question posed by the journalist in the lead up to Ghana’s opening 2015 AFCON qualifier against Uganda.

Baffour Gyan and Samuel Anim Addo were arrested by the Kumasi Police and were later arraigned before court where they faced two counts of assault.

The complainant – Daniel Kenu – however surprisingly told the court in its third sitting he was no longer interested in pursuing the case on health and family grounds.

Several sympathizers and interest groups, in particular the larger Ghanaian media were left bitterly disappointed with some alluding to collusion between Daniel Kenu and the Gyan’s for financial gains.

But lawyer of the Gyan family – Kissi Agyabeng - in addressing several issues ‘of national interest’ at a press conference on Wednesday, says though he initially wanted to settle the case out of court, his intention was never carried out due to the poisoned atmosphere around the case.

“I never said there was any settlement. I was desirous of an out of court settlement but I realized no one was interested in that,” he said.

“The man said he was under pressure at the third sitting and that he was referred to a psychologist.

“And in his letter of withdrawal, he never mentioned any form of settlement reached. His reasons were based on health grounds.

“When the case first went to court, I was desirous of an out of court settlement but the when arrived, the heard several charges by interested groups to go the full haul.

“So it struck me that the out of court settlement was not going to happen so I was preparing myself to defend my client.

“Only to come to court and be told the complainant was opting out and I took it with both hands.

“We never met with Daniel Kenu or made him an offer of any sort to drop the case.”

Lawyer Kissi Agyabeng offered an apology on behalf of the Gyan’s over their involvement in the whole alleged assault saga but insisted they weren’t the ones who carried out the alleged despicable act.

“We deeply regret one thing. We regret the presence of Baffour Gyan at the location where Daniel Kenu was roughed up,” Agyabeng added.

“He was still fuming over Daniel Kenu’s question posed to his brother earlier. And he confronted him angrily.

“A few unhappy words were spoken in the heat of the situation. We regret this incident especially because it created an avenue for some young men, who were present, to rough the journalist up.

“Baffour Gyan ought to have known that some of these young men are prone to fighting causes for football stars and his angry outburst at Daniel Kenu may unintentionally send a signal to them to get physical.

“We apologize for Baffour Gyan’s angry outburst at Daniel Kenu. It was uncalled for and we believe it will not be repeated.”
