Gyan looking to draw inspiration from penalty miss

Asamoah Gyan aims to use his penalty miss at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations as a springboard to power Ghana to Nations Cup victory in 2013.

The Al Ain striker's poor tournament in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea was summed up with his 8th minute penalty miss in the semi final game against Zambia.

The miss proved very costly for the title ambitious Black Stars as they went down 1-0 to the Chipolopolo who will go on to beat Ivory Coast in the final to win their first Nations Cup trophy.

But Gyan who is no stranger to intense criticisms for penalty misses with his quarter final miss at the 2010 World Cup against Uuruguay readily coming to mind refuses to be bogged down by the fresh setback.

“It is hard for a footballer to miss a penalty kick, but it happens in big championships as we saw in football history and it is destiny to shot a penalty kick in a decisive time," Gyan said.

“At these moments they have double responsibility. Many feelings simultaneously strike the players as they shot penalty kicks at this moment.

"In addition, he feels afraid of losing an ideal chance; it is a matter of luck mostly."

Gyan, who had kept his silence since his miss against Zambia, says he will be spurred on to win the trophy in the future with the Black Stars.

"For me losing this penalty kicks increase my will and determination to change the image of some people’s view about the player who missed a penalty kick, so I show my best and follow my ambitions and aspirations.”

The half-fit Gyan could only manage a goal in the tournament having come into the competition with so much promise on the back of an impressive goalscoring run with his UAE club.
