Gyan replies critics with classic goal in Ghana’s win over Niger

Asamoah Gyan finally broke his goal duck to score in Ghana’s 3-0 win over Niger in their final group B game in South Africa on Monday night.

The Black Stars captain has been criticized in the local media for failing to inspire the Ghanaians at the continental showpiece but his 6th minute effort should end talk of his scoring drought and should go some way to easing the 27-year-old back to top form after a slow start in the tournament.

The former Sunderland hitman wasted no time in blasting home from close range to beat goalkeeper Daouda Kassal to register his first goal in the tournament.

Gyan then provided the assist as he laid the pass to Christian Atsu who scored the second with an intelligent lob in the 23rd minute.

France-based defender John Boye was an unlikely source of goal as he scored the third in the 48th minute.

Asamoah Gyan’s header was pushed away by the Nigerien goalkeeper and the Stade Rennes strong-centre back had the simplest of task of tucking the ball into the net.

The victory sends Ghana to the top of the table and set-up a quarter-final clash against Cape Verde on Saturday February 2 at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Port Elizabeth.
