Harrison Afful set to beat Gyan, Ayew to clinch top SWAG award - report
Afful is gunning for the top award against Andre Ayew and Asamoah Gyan

Harrison Afful will be named the Footballer of the Year at the 40th edition of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) awards ceremony on Saturday, according to the General Telegraph.

The Columbus Crew right-back beat competition from Black Stars team mates Andre Ayew and Asamoah Gyan to clinch the top award which will be unveiled at a ceremony to be held at State Banquet Hall in Accra.

Even though executives of SWAG remain tight-lipped on the votes cast, checks conducted by the General Telegraph revealed that most of the delegates who voted for the top award were in favour of the former Esperance man due to his immense achievements in 2014.

The Black Stars defender displayed an impressive performance at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and was adjudged the Most Valuable Player in Ghana’s second group game against Germany which was widely regarded as one of the best games of the tournament.

Afful is best remembered in that game for his flawless assist to Andre Ayew which fetched Ghana’s equalizer in the thrilling game that eventually ended 2-2.

The 29-year-old also won the Tunisian league with Esperance in the year under review.

Afful toppled competitors, Asamoah Gyan who reclaimed the Arabian Gold League with Al Ain and Andre Dede Ayew whose performance for Marseille earned him 14 goals in 24 matches.
