Hearts goalkeeper Tetteh Luggard has made a chilling revelation about he nearly quit football due to heavy criticism.

Luggard endured a difficult spell at the start of last season with constant criticism and allegations leveled against him over his form.

The former Might Jets shot-stopper says he nearly called time on his young career for fear of his life.

“It was terrible, and it really affected my confidence and my morale as a player. The insults were becoming too much for me as the supporters failed to understand that football is team work and that if everyone does his work well, the ball won’t even get to my end,” he revealed.

“It was crazy, because it got to a time I didn’t feel safe anymore because the threats were becoming too much, and from the tone of their voice, they were serious.

“ I remember in one of our matches at the Accra sports stadium, almost the entire stadium booed at me ordering the coaches to substitute me and that was at the time the team was being transformed from the Duncan era to the Polo era, so things were very tough for us the players.”

“I then decided to quit football and stopped training and remained at home for close to two months. I even bought a new sim-card and switched off my phone because I did not want anything to do with football anymore.

“But after sober reflection, I had to rescind my decision, especially when it became evident that the Club had issues with goalkeeping as my other colleague, Philemon McCarthy got injured in the away game against Liberty and was ruled out for the rest of the season.”
