Hellas Verona 1-2 Frosinone: Canarini captain steps up in relegation scrap

Published on: 17 April 2016

Hellas Verona collapsed in a 1-2 defeat to Frosinone at the Stadio Bentegodi for their Sunday afternoon Serie A relegation tussle.

Daniele Russo netted in the first half only for Matteo Bianchetti to respond after the restart, but Alessandro Frara scored the vital winner.

The first opportunity of the game came the way of the home side, Luca Toni releasing Artur Ionita who in turn found Urby Emanuelson, but the Dutchman was closed down in a good position. After that early foray, Frosinone responded and in the best way possible, Daniele Russo thundering his shot past Pierluigi Gollini from the corner.

The Gialloblu came back fighting, a speculative effort from Juanito Gomez caught Nicola Leali off-guard, but the shot eventually dropped wide. Daniel Ciofani then came agonisingly close when Russo found him, but the striker could only hit the post. Emanuelson then came close once again, but he hit the ball from Toni over the bar.

In the second half the equaliser finally arrived, defender Matteo Bianchetti rising highest to head the ball beyond the outstretched Leali. It could have got worse for Frosinone shortly after, but Toni missed a chance he would so normally gobble up after Leali misjudged the flight of the ball.

Ionita then had a glorious chance to head his side in front, but the Moldovan international saw it swerve over the crossbar. In extra time the game finally had a winner, the cross from Luca Paganini finding captain Alessandro Frara who made no mistake with a bullet of a header. The plight of Hellas Verona continues, while Frosinone go ahead of Palermo onto 30 points, with their chances of surviving still very much alive.
