Thirteen days spent at Ghana will be the time frame that eight HU women’s soccer members are going to spend doing mission work partnered with Be2Live.
They are headed to an orphanage, joined by the City of Refuge Ministry, a ministry dedicated to raising and restoring children and teens who have been rescued from exploitation, abuse, or trafficking, while also showing them the love of Christ.
Blaire Koomler, senior and one of the captains on the team, is excited for the race relations aspect of the trip since is something that she wants to do after she graduates next May.
The team will be teaching kids basic English skills and teaching them about Jesus.
“We have a really good dynamic within the group and we have a solid group of girls going that are on the team.” Said Koomler.
The fundraising process, she says, hasn’t been a setback for the team.
They made shirts and also sold baked goods at basketball games. They discussed reaching out to local churches if they could donate to their trip but thought it would be better if they got involved with the churches and the people who attended them.
“We thought about doing spaghetti dinners or a pancake breakfast, things like this,” said Koomler, “and The Well was a church that was really open and really wanted to do this for us, so it worked out really well.”
The head pastor being one of HU men’s soccer coaches indeed made it easier for them to get The Well to accept their pancake fundraising, getting them closer to meeting their monetary goal.
Koomler has been feeling that in this trip God will reveal something big to her, but in the meantime, she is excited to see how it will impact everyone who is going.
“I’m just excited to see the Lord stretch all of us in different ways,” said Koomler, “and I’m excited to see how that plays in all of our lives.”
