Ex-Ghana star Mohammed Ahmed 'Polo' claims he was far better than Lionel Messi during his playing days for club and country.

Messi, who has won the Fifa World Best Player several times, is touted by as the greatest footballer ever because of his silky skills for Barcelona and Argentina.

Polo, affectionately called "The Dribbling Magician", admits Messi is an extra-ordinary player because of his super human football skills

But the Ghanaian legend insists those who saw him will attest that he was head and shoulders above the Barcelona star.

"Me for instance, I was such a good player on the ball than even Lionel Messi. I could do many things with the ball that he cannot do now," Polo told Sunyani-based Dinpa FM.

"I watch him play regularly and hear people saying he is the best footballer of all time but I disagree and hope most people who watched me will also do same.

He added: "We tend to hype footballers too much nowadays and I can tell you if we had got this kind of hype during our time then Messi would have been now here near me."

Polo was part of the 1978 Ghana squad that won the Nations Cup on home soil and a member of Heart of Oak's "Fearsome Fivesome".

He also played for Dubai-based Al Wasl in the 1980s.

Ghanaian legend Abedi Pele and three-time African Player of the Year believes that Mohammed Polo was the greatest footballer.
