Bangkok: A Samuel Tampubolon hat-trick secured Indonesia a sensational 3-3 draw with Japan and a place in the AFC U-20 Futsal Championship quarter-finals.

The draw guarantees the Southeast Asians – who have played all four of their matches - at the very least a top-two finish in Group B, while Japan will now face a nerve wracking final Matchday clash with Vietnam with their qualification hopes still hanging in the balance.

Table-topping Indonesia opened the scoring at the Hua Mark Stadium when Tampubolon fired home his first of the day on nine minutes, before goals from Jiei Yamada and Shokei Okada handed Japan the lead going into half-time.

Japan duly stretched their advantage when captain Kazuya Shimizu pounced on 34 minutes, but Indonesia were not to be denied as Tampubolon struck twice in the last three minutes to send his team through to the last eight.

  • The winner of Group B will face Group A’s runners-up in the quarter-finals
  • Japan’s next game: May 20, Japan v Vietnam
  • Japan: Yamada 13’, Okada 14; Shimizu 34’
    Indonesia: Tampubolon 9’, 37’, 40’
