Injury-cursed Ghana midfielder Michael Essien is a major doubt for Panathinaikos League game against Xanthi on Saturday as he continues to train alone due to worrying fitness concerns.

The 32-year-old midfielder ran individual drills alongside teammate Konstantinos Kotsaris during Monday’s recovery session at Koropi.

The Ghana international has endured more injury hell since joining the Greek giants from AC Milan as he is yet to play in a competitive game.

The former Chelsea midfielder has serious fitness concerns as he continues to train alone at the club, with no clear signs of recovery in sight.

A press release regarding the workout was quoted as saying: "Morning workout at Koropi included the first team squad of Panathinaikos. Those "green" who struggled yesterday against platanias did therapy, while the other program was warming up, passing, holding the ball and games. Essien and Kotsaris proponithikan trained individually, while Bemer and Ninis underwent treatment and individual program. Players of Panathinaikos will have tomorrow off .”

The comeback trail of the Ghana international appears to be clouded as he struggles to shake off knee and groin problems.

Essien has notoriously been cursed by injuries over the years with no end in sight to the troubles that has affected his form and stature in world football.
