Iraq and Shenaishil part ways following World Cup qualifying woe

Baghdad: Radhi Shenaishil has been dismissed as head coach of Iraq following a series of poor performances in the on-going FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 Asian Qualifiers.

Iraq have lost five of their seven matches in the third round of qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, the latest of which - a 1-0 defeat away to Saudi Arabia last month - has left them fifth in Group B and effectively unable to qualify.

"We are not happy with the results and the coaching team is to be sacked and replaced by foreign staff," said an Iraqi Football Association (IFA) statement on their Facebook page.

"The IFA will work with the Iraqi government and the Iraqi Olympic Committee to provide funds for a replacement."

Shenaishil was in his second spell with the Lions of Mesopotamia, having previously guided them to fourth place at the 2015 AFC Asian Cup in Australia.

The 50-year-old becomes the third coach to lose his job during the qualifiers, following Kiatisuk Senamuang's departure from Thailand and Mahdi Ali's exit from his position with the United Arab Emirates.
