Is the Kotoko coach being used as a scape-goat?

Published on: 25 July 2011

Like most football teams apart from English side Arsenal, when their side is beaten the first person they blame is the coach and Kotoko are chief culprits in this direction.

Just 24 hours after they were soundly beaten by Nania in the Ghana FA Cup final, the management team of the club has decided to dispense with the services of coach Bogdan Korak.

The Serbian trainer has been unduly blamed for the inability of the Kumasi-based club to book their place in the group phase of next season’s CAF Confederation cup, by virtue of annexing the trophy.

While the millions of Kotoko fans and pundits have been left to speculate the future of Korak, the management of the club have already decided to sack him.

But the Porcupine Warriors who have in recent times sacked coaches under similar circumstances, must tread cautiously and not allow emotions to overcome reasoning.

The performance of the Eastern European coach can be considered satisfactory despite the fact he could not guide the team to victory on Sunday.

Korak took charge of the club at a time that the club was wallowing at a parlous 14th position on the league table, playing unattractive football and where team confidence was at the lowest ebb.

He has been largely credited for the transformation of the powerhouse that saw them move from strength to strength and eventually landed them on the 3rd position- and gets another shot at the prestigious pre-season top-4 competition and masterminded their path to the finals of the revamped FA Cup competition.

For a side that is determined to recapture past glory and increase their trophy cabinet, it’s imperative crucial decisions are taken with outermost patience and sober reflection.

The FA cup has always produced intricacies and given room for upsets and that’s what has made the competition thick all over the world. Championship side Cardiff City were in the finals of the English FA cup at the expense of giants like Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal and despite the fact they lost against relegated Portsmouth, it gave an indication of what the FA cup was all about.

Did the teams sack their coaches because they did not win the FA cup?

Admittedly coaches are hired to be fired. But the rampant dismissal of coaches by local clubs has not helped to better their lot and avalanche of examples are available.

Korak is still contracted to Kotoko and therefore the termination of his contract will come with a heavy financial burden to the club in the payment of compensation. At a time that the club is struggling to buy top-notch players due to financial constraints, the last thing the management should do is to bow to pressure.

Already World governing body, FIFA, has directed the club to pay Russian side FC Saturn €30,000 over the transfer of Shilla Illiasu.

Is the Kotoko decision to sack Bogdan Korak justified?
