It is hard to take that Tottenham ace Dele Alli is not playing for Liverpool – Aldridge

John Aldridge has lamented Liverpool allowing Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli to slip through their fingers.

Alli is a boyhood Liverpool fan and the midfielder was believed to be on the verge of joining the Reds from MK Dons last season, only for the transfer to fall through at the last minute.

Alli instead joined Tottenham and has since developed into arguably one of the best young players in England which has Anfield great Aldridge bemoaning the fact that Liverpool passed up on the opportunity to sign Alli and stated that he could have been the club's next 'Steven Gerrard'.

Aldridge wrote on his column for the Liverpool Echo: "Dele Alli is going to be a star - make no mistake about that. I baulk at the fact that Liverpool had this kid and let him go.

"We've bought so many inept players over the last few years for so much money and you look at what we turned away, it really hurts me to see.

"The kid wanted to play for Liverpool, he was a fan who loved Steven Gerrard when he was younger. He had a manager at MK Dons in Karl Robinson who was keen for him to go to Liverpool.

"So to miss out on him and to now see what he's doing for Spurs and for England, it is hard to take. You can see what a player he'll become, he can play in so many different positions."
